An antiquarian Thomasina Bateman is writing a publication on the barrows of England that documents the treasures that she discovers in. A captivating letter encourages her to travel to the small village of Bewlay located in rural England. She departs on a train with her assistant that same day.
On her arrival, the mysterious man who summoned her is nowhere to be found. Her assistant never arrives. The landowner is obnoxious and denies acces to his barrow. Many people fear the woman as she is a solo traveler. wears trousers.
